Jon Heyman: Waiver trade deadline a yawner except for Ramirez

With the exception of the accepted waiver claim of Manny Ramirez by the White Sox, the waiver trade deadline was a real dud, with the change-of-scenery-type trades of Manny Delcarmen and Jeff Francoeur the only deadline-day moves. It was a year when GMs were especially aggressive with their claims and blocks, severely limiting deals. But Manny has spiced up trade deadlines before (take the 2008 non-waiver deadline when he went in a memorable three-team trade, for instance), and he could well spice up the AL Central race, executives predict.

Peter King: Colts worry new rule will affect hurry-up offense

MINNEAPOLIS -- Odd, sort of, to be reviewing the most important week of the preseason and writing mainly about the impact of an officiating decision. But the most intriguing event of the third round of games has to do with officiating, and the effect of moving the umpire from the defensive to the offensive side of the ball so he won't be such a defenseless target in the middle of pass patterns.

Jon Heyman: Smart money on Manny landing with White Sox

Manny Ramirez's days as a Dodger appear numbered, and his number should be up by Tuesday, by which time Mannywood should finally come to a close after an eventful run. At least, that's what should happen.

Jay Clemons: A wild night of mini-Revelations and the mock draft spectacular

I spent a good chunk of Thursday mock- and real-drafting for fantasy football, utilizing three distinctive methods: 1) Standard-scoring leagues, 2) Points Per Reception leagues and 3) Auction leagues. And as luck would have it, I'll devote a sizable piece of Friday's Clicks to the draft results. But first ...

Jack McCallum: Sports world loses gem in former Pistons p.r. director Dobek

In mid-April, I flew to Detroit to interview Detroit Pistons public relations director Matt Dobek for a book I'm writing about the 1992 Dream Team. In Barcelona, Matt served as one of four press people attached to the U.S. team, his primary responsibility being coach Chuck Daly, with whom he worked in Detroit. Matt did a superior job, which wasn't surprising; he was a major player in those halcyon days of the NBA, someone who skillfully walked the line as both an advocate for his team and an honest resource for the press.

Jay Clemons Fantasy Clicks: Raging debates, mini-Revelations and RB handcuffs

Let's start today's Fantasy Clicks with six too-close-to-call debates for draft day. And for the sake of consistency, I'll stick to the realm of standard-scoring leagues:

Bryan Armen Graham: Adamek emerges in shallow, Klitschko-led heavyweight crowd

NEWARK, N.J. -- The gulf in the heavyweight division between the Klitschko brothers and everyone else seems as wide as ever.

Andy Staples: Fewer dollars, more scorched earth in jayvee realignment shuffle

Karl Benson was in Los Angeles on Wednesday to drop off his daughter for her freshman year at USC. In a way, the WAC commissioner probably felt like a college freshman pondering the possibilities on the horizon.

Jim Kelley: NHL’s R&D camp reduces World Summit to hot air

It's not as incomprehensible as the Rules of Golf or even what constitutes a sand trap at Whistling Straits, but it is a bit confusing that there are two hockey summits on the calendar this month in Toronto.

Joe Lemire: Nationals, Harper look smart with signing, begin slow pro transition

In the end, Bryce Harper and the Nationals needed each other too much for him not to sign.
